Heat Recovery Systems

Heat recovery systems are mechanical devices used in HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems to recover waste heat from exhaust air and use it to preheat incoming fresh air. These systems are also known as heat exchangers or energy recovery ventilators (ERVs).

Here's how heat recovery systems work:

Exhaust Air Extraction: In buildings with mechanical ventilation systems, stale indoor air is continuously exhausted from areas such as bathrooms, kitchens, and other occupied spaces. This exhaust air contains heat energy that would otherwise be lost to the outside environment.

Heat Exchange: Heat recovery systems capture the heat from the exhaust air using a heat exchanger. This heat exchanger consists of a series of plates or tubes through which the exhaust air passes. At the same time, fresh outdoor air is drawn into the system and also passes through the heat exchanger.

Transfer of Heat: As the exhaust air passes through the heat exchanger, its heat energy is transferred to the incoming fresh air without the two air streams mixing. This transfer of heat warms up the fresh air before it is distributed throughout the building by the HVAC system.

Energy Efficiency: By preheating the incoming fresh air, heat recovery systems reduce the workload on the heating system, resulting in energy savings and lower heating costs. Additionally, they help maintain indoor air quality by providing fresh air while minimizing the loss of conditioned air to the outside.

Variants: There are different types of heat recovery systems available, including sensible heat recovery systems and enthalpy heat recovery systems.

Sensible heat recovery systems transfer only heat energy, while enthalpy heat recovery systems can also transfer moisture, making them suitable for humid climates.

Overall, heat recovery systems play a crucial role in improving energy efficiency, reducing heating costs, and maintaining indoor air quality in buildings. They are commonly used in residential, commercial, and industrial applications where mechanical ventilation is required.
